Robin saw the b/w psychological horror film The Lighthouse directed and co-written by Robert Eggers from 2019 starring Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson as two lighthouse keepers who start to lose their sanity during a storm while they are stationed on a remote island.
It is deeply symbolic: only the older one (Defoe) is allowed upstairs to take care of the fire (God?) and is in charge, while the younger one (Pattinson) has to do hard work.while being mocked by his boss.
There is an evil and aggressive one-eyed seagul which is not to be killed since that brings bad luck. The younger one kills it anyway, makes love to a maremaid, buries the older one alive, gets injured because he is attacked with an axe by the latter, goes upstairs to the fire at last, gets burned and ends up on the shore where seaguls eat his intestines.
Verdict:.
“I didn’t find The Lighthouse scary whatsoever. The aspect ratio of almost 1:1 is intended to trigger claustrophobia and had no effect on me. I have an idea of psychological horror films that is more traditional, like Psycho, The Shining, or Silence of the Lambs – but each to their own.”
