Review: the Invitation (2015)

The Invitation

Robin saw the thriller The Invitation from 2015 by Karyn Kusama with Logan Marshall-Green, Tammy Blanchard, Michiel Huisman, and Emayatzy Corinealdi.

It is about a grieving man whose son died two years ago, after which his marriage was divorced. After two years he and his ex-wife meet again at a dinner party with some strangers. But it is mysterious, apparently everyone has joined a strange cult.

At first Robin thought that the former wife of the hero was called “Ethan”, which confused him very much: “Maybe she is in reality a man and a transvestite! Or maybe she’s been sex-changed!” But then he understood that her name was actually “Eden”, which reassured him: “Oh well, well then…”

Besides, at the beginning of the movie a coyote is hit by a car and then killed out of pity. Robin retrospectively suspects that it was a metaphor to get in the mood: “Death as release from all earthly torments.”
Unfortunately, the movie takes some time to get rolling, but after about an hour it gets very exciting.

Verdict: Despite some flaws worth watching.
